Which Culinary Schools Get You Cooking Abroad

Attend culinary school and work as a chef in Paris.One of the advantages to working as a chef is that you can take your culinary arts skills practically anywhere. Not only are chefs employed all over the United States, but abroad as well. You could prepare French delicacies in a Parisian bistro, sushi in a Japanese restaurant, or American food in one of the many international hotels, resorts or cruise ships seeking American chefs. Wealthy families or celebrities may even hire American culinary school graduates to be their personal chefs.

Whether to Stay Home or Travel for Your Culinary Degree Program

If your mission is to prepare American food in another country, earning a degree from a culinary school in the U.S. may be a wise place to start, since American chefs are often actively recruited by international venues.

On the other hand, if you want to prepare Chinese food in Beijing, or be a sommelier in Italy, you may be more hireable if you attend a culinary degree program within that country. Employers may have more confidence in your abilities if your education has come directly from and been tailored to the specialties of that region.

Ways to Get Cooking Abroad

Some American culinary degree programs are directly linked to culinary schools abroad. Such programs may offer exchange opportunities, allowing students to travel to a foreign country to complete coursework. This can also be a good way to connect with potential employers after graduation. Places with a rapid economic growth rate and plenty of international residents, like Dubai and Beijing, may be particularly good locations for American chefs.
