Culinary Arts


The Culinary Arts Program 

This American Culinary Federation accredited degree program prepares students to become professional chefs. Courses focus on developing skills, with a combination of classroom theory and hands-on production. Classes include cooking, garde manger, pastries, ice carving, and catering and event planning. Graduates earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree and are eligible for certification by the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

The Culinary Arts Apprenticeship Program
This is a unique and intense experience for students desiring to become certified executive chefs. The apprenticeship program is a partnership with the Michigan chapter of the American Culinary Federation and Oakland Community College. Upon completion, students are prepared to test for their ACF certification. Classes may be applied toward earning their Associate Degree at OCC. This award-winning program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute and is the only one of its kind in Southeast Michigan.

The Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate Program
This specialized course of study focuses on hands-on experience in commercial baking and pastry arts. Classes include plated desserts, artisan breads and wedding cake design. Students concentrating on this area may earn a certificate, qualifying them to be employed as bakers and pastry chefs.

OCC Can Get You There
Jobs for chefs, bakers and cooks are expected to increase by 15% nationwide. * This increase is attributed to families having higher incomes and a higher percentage of people dining out. Additionally, the number of restaurants increases with growth in population, personal income and leisure time. 

In the Detroit area, the number of culinary jobs is also expected to increase by 15% through the year 2006 according to Occupational Employment Forecast, Michigan Dept. of Career Development
