For those soon-to-be students of culinary schools, selecting a city to serve as home throughout your culinary education is an important consideration. Not only should the culinary schools available in an area fit your goals as a chef, but the city itself should support your tastes as well.

In Austin, Texas, students of culinary schools often find all their major criteria met. Austin provides culinary students with a wide array of local eateries in which to experience diverse dishes. Austin is also home to a number of surrounding farms, so fresh meats and produce are readily available. And the music scene in Austin is nothing to scoff at, either.

Culinary Schools in Austin
Those who enroll in Austin culinary programs should be impressed not only by the lessons learned within the classroom kitchen, but also by the flavors experienced in dining rooms throughout this Texan town. As a southern city with a progressive twist, it should not be hard to find nearly every type of cuisine, from vegetarian and all-raw food to classic Indian cuisine and--of course--famous Texas barbecue, all within Austin's city limits.

In addition, Austin boasts a large number of surrounding farms and cattle ranches, so the availability of fresh meat and produce is high. Everything from broccoli and bok choy to hot peppers and pumpkins may be found in the grocery stores of Austin, along with local proteins such as bison and duck.

Getting Down in Austin
During down time, away from the classrooms of culinary schools, Austin culinary students can enjoy the world-famous music scene in this Texas auditory oasis. Deemed the "Live Music Capital of the World," Austin is headquarters for two major music festivals each year, along with many smaller ones, too. Check out South by Southwest in March and Austin City Limits in September. Otherwise, just head down to Sixth Street for live music any night of the week.
